Discussion of Set Design

We had a set designer come visit us to discuss the sets we thought of creating for our music videoclip and props needed as well as setting the role of who would provide what.

We first began by giving a short summary on the videoclip's concept and each location we would shoot in. We also explained to her the different locations/set ups we would have and the mood board we had previously created so she could understand the sort of aesthetic we were aiming to achieve in our videoclip.

These notes were taken throughout our conversation with the teachers.

Shooting day plan:

Morning set up -bunk bed set up
Later part in the morning -topsy-turvy set up
After lunch -door set up

Set ups- 1 to 3- The bunk bed/main room

The bunk bed location will be divided into three different set ups.

Set up #1- Floor

On the actual shoot day, we would shoot the bunk bed scene first thing in the morning. We would start shooting the floor scene first.

We would place a wooden plank or sort of stand to make the bunk taller to be able to film the space between the bottom bunk and floor. The floor set up would look like a sort of engine room. We would place pipes/tubes underneath the bunk bed and sticking out.
We would use a smoke machine and a red lighting to further create an engine room effect.

The aim for this room is to serve as a reflection of the male lead's personality- sort of edgy and dark.

Set up #2- Bottom bunk

We would then move to the bottom bunk which would be the 'meeting point' of the two characters and the setting where the two characters' interests meet- perhaps their passion for creating music and homemade films?

We would create a sort of retro room- home studio type room with posters, records, instruments, filming equipment, etc.

Set up #3- Top bunk

The top bunk would represent the female lead's personality- a softer and girly room. It would include props such as fairy lights, polaroid pictures hung on the wall, etc. A projection screen would be used to create a starry effect/lighting.

The other set ups will be created individually.

Set up #4- Topsy turvy

This set up is suppose to manipulate perspective. We don't have a clear vision on exactly how the location will be, however, we know we will need furniture such as sofas, tables, chairs, etc.

We will also use a retro TV, and vintage camera.

Set up #5- Door

The door is the final set where a door will be placed separating the two artists.
On the boy's side, there will be pipes surrounding him as well as a warm, edgy sort of lighting.
On the girl's side, a projector will be shown- perhaps a colder lighting.

After discussing this, we were asked to do a create a spreadsheet dictating what props for the sets would we need, and who would be providing what- whether it was our media group, the set designer or the media department. We also were asked to send her the mood board for reference.
