First draft of set up #4 :Topsy-turvy

Workshop #4- Editing music video

In this lesson we had a workshop on how to edit a music videoclip. Like last year, we will be using the app Premiere Pro to edit this.

When editing a music videoclip there is a specific order in what must be edited:

1) Performance cut- band's performance
2) Narrative cut
3) Any effects work- texts, etc
4) Colouring

To edit the footage together we must first synch footage. For this we use clapper board- prop used to assist in synchronise the picture and sound together.

We edit the song by adding a beep, counting in on audio to make it easier to keep track.

There are two ways to synch the footage:

Picture synch
  • Find the same number on clapper board on both screens
  • To start in the beginning of the footage, pick a random number
  • Cut clip then find number on clapper board to line up
Sound synch
  • When filming something very close- closeup shot- you wouldn't be able to capture the clapper board
  • Listen to loud beep, drum hits cut then drag clip to audio

Three rules when editing a music videoclip:
  1. Listen to music and illustrate what you hear
  2. Group your shots
  3. Follow the movement

Unlike editing an opening sequence, it's not recommended to create a rough cut as it's a waste of time- ends up being too similar to the final cut.

Discussion of Set Design

We had a set designer come visit us to discuss the sets we thought of creating for our music videoclip and props needed as well as setting the role of who would provide what.

We first began by giving a short summary on the videoclip's concept and each location we would shoot in. We also explained to her the different locations/set ups we would have and the mood board we had previously created so she could understand the sort of aesthetic we were aiming to achieve in our videoclip.

These notes were taken throughout our conversation with the teachers.

Shooting day plan:

Morning set up -bunk bed set up
Later part in the morning -topsy-turvy set up
After lunch -door set up

Set ups- 1 to 3- The bunk bed/main room

The bunk bed location will be divided into three different set ups.

Set up #1- Floor

On the actual shoot day, we would shoot the bunk bed scene first thing in the morning. We would start shooting the floor scene first.

We would place a wooden plank or sort of stand to make the bunk taller to be able to film the space between the bottom bunk and floor. The floor set up would look like a sort of engine room. We would place pipes/tubes underneath the bunk bed and sticking out.
We would use a smoke machine and a red lighting to further create an engine room effect.

The aim for this room is to serve as a reflection of the male lead's personality- sort of edgy and dark.

Set up #2- Bottom bunk

We would then move to the bottom bunk which would be the 'meeting point' of the two characters and the setting where the two characters' interests meet- perhaps their passion for creating music and homemade films?

We would create a sort of retro room- home studio type room with posters, records, instruments, filming equipment, etc.

Set up #3- Top bunk

The top bunk would represent the female lead's personality- a softer and girly room. It would include props such as fairy lights, polaroid pictures hung on the wall, etc. A projection screen would be used to create a starry effect/lighting.

The other set ups will be created individually.

Set up #4- Topsy turvy

This set up is suppose to manipulate perspective. We don't have a clear vision on exactly how the location will be, however, we know we will need furniture such as sofas, tables, chairs, etc.

We will also use a retro TV, and vintage camera.

Set up #5- Door

The door is the final set where a door will be placed separating the two artists.
On the boy's side, there will be pipes surrounding him as well as a warm, edgy sort of lighting.
On the girl's side, a projector will be shown- perhaps a colder lighting.

After discussing this, we were asked to do a create a spreadsheet dictating what props for the sets would we need, and who would be providing what- whether it was our media group, the set designer or the media department. We also were asked to send her the mood board for reference.

Development of Storyboarding: Set up #1

In this lesson, we began by creating a first draft of our sequence's storyboard. We first sketched  a few shots we wanted to include in our videoclip- specifically in the first set up, the bunk bed.

For each set up we created small sketches with short notes on the side dictating the actions being shot.

Group Discussion #6 -Sets

This week we discussed potential sets for our music videoclip:

1) Main set- Bed bunk

Divide into three different sets- top bunk, bottom bunk and floor

2) Second set- TV room or Door room

Storyboarding Notes

Shot sizes

E.g. Subject closely framed in the shot gives us increased detail on the actors' facial expressions.

Over the shoulder shot gives us a perspective of conversations- usually comes in sequences.

Camera angle

E.g High angle shot displays the characters' vulnerability- represents lower status.

Low angle displays power/importance- higher status.

Key Components of storyboard

  • An image represents what the audience would see.
  • A shot numbers are used to keep track of the frames and narrative in order.
  • The location and the time of day of the shot so the lighting can arranged.
  • The type of shot (use the names that we used at the start).
  • A brief description of what happens in the shot.
  • Arrows indicating any camera movements in the shot

Colour scheme

In today's lesson we discussed the colour scheme for each floor- top, bottom and floor.

Top bunk:

The top bunk would be the female lead's area. The colours should represent a soft, feminine feel to the room and the girl's personality.

Sage green              Light pink               Dusty pink

Bottom bunk:

The bottom bunk would be the male lead's area. The colours should represent a more edgier, dark feel to the room and the boy's personality.

Dusty purple           Light purple              Dark blue

Bottom bunk:

The floor would be the male lead's area. The colours should represent a more edgier, dark feel to the room and the boy's personality.

     Brownish orange               Red               Beige/Light brown

  • Early 20th-century
  • Emphasised strong colour

Pop art

  • Based in United Kingdom and the United States
  • Mid- to late-1950s
  • Challenged traditions
  • Includes imagery from popular and mass culture- e.g. advertising and comic books

Surrealism

  • Based in Europe
  • After World War I
  • Illogical scenes
  • Expression

  • Different views of subjects (usually objects or figures)
  • Fragmented and abstracted

Modernism

  • Early 20th century
  • New representation modern industrial life

Feedback on concept

Notes:

  • Art concept is good- settings based on art movement/paintings
  • Theatrical element- roll on- not playing to our strengths
  • Film over theatre- don't have to do production as such
  • Look into Edgar wright- best director at transitions in film
  • Sets inspired by specific painting- e.g. realism, expressionism
  • Iconic painting- expressed through location, costumes, etc.
  • Apply projector idea to it
  • How to translate paintings and art movements on set? Could be time-consuming, difficult to achieve

Our cast

We discussed casting Luke as our male lead to our teacher. It was agreed that he would be the best option as he was comfortable performing in front of the camera and his aesthetic/look matched our description. The female lead had already been casted too.

Development of videoclip's concept

We discussed on a possible concept where the band would be interested in art. This interest could be easily shown/transferred into their music videoclips, social media pages, digital-packs, etc.

Linking to the band's interest in art we considered basing the music videoclip of an art movement- each setting would represent a well-known painting from the art movement of choice.

Example: Coldplay's album cover is a recreation of a classical painting. Coldplay's "Viva la Vida's" album cover (2008) is the painting of "Liberty Leading the People" (1830)

Other examples of musicians' interest for art/ how they present it:

Halsey's Graveyard music videoclip- a time-lapse video of the artist painting her album cover in a huge canvas.

Workshop #3- Lighting sets

Lighting

Every time a light is turned on you must say "eyes down, sparking"

Adjust exposure on camera to make camera shot less bright (or) use a trace and place it in front of lights to make it less harsh.

Lights in the room = house lights/workers

Single point lighting

Redhead lights are used for general film light- has a protective mesh in case the bulbs blows.

Redhead lights are placed next to camera.

Three point lighting- lighting three different points

Key light, redhead light and backlight.

Backlight (also known as blonde) is used
in order for subject to not merge with background.

Beauty lighting

Adjusting the exposure make the image get sharper. Lighting board bounces light easily- easier to diffuse.

Fluorescent lighting

Skin complexion matter with lights.
